Zoo Animals: Behaviour, Management, and Welfare (2nd ed)
Geoff Hosey, Vicky Melfi and Sheila Pankhurst
Oxford University Press
With undergraduate courses in animal management becoming increasingly popular, the appearance of a new edition of this textbook on zoo animals is timely. It is written in a lively and accessible style, and covers every aspect of zoo animal management, from basic biology to legislation and record keeping. It is highly readable and scientifically well grounded.
The only disappointment is the illustrations, which, apart from a small section of colour plates, are in black and white. Coloured illustrations are apparently available online, but not to readers of the book, only to 'registered adopters' of the book. This should not, however, detract from the fact that this book deserves to be on the bookshelf of every aspiring zoo manager or researcher.
