President's Medal - "incredibly proud"

This prestigious Medal is awarded to individuals who have supported the Royal Society of Biology in an exceptional way, going above and beyond the normal volunteer role and having a significant impact on the organisation and the sector as a whole.

Science Communication Awards - "Growing up in a society with high level of misconception about science, I started science communication to enhance science awareness in my community and inspire young African students"

These awards reward outreach work carried out by researchers to inform, enthuse and engage the public. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, from the University of Sussex, was delighted to be recognised for his work.

British Biology Olympiad - "inspired by David Attenborough documentaries"

The British Biology Olympiad is a wonderful opportunity for post-16 students with an interest in biology to extend their talents. It provides them with a platform to explore the life sciences beyond the A level syllabus and to be suitably rewarded. Regional activities – "the best place in England to see, hear and smell seabirds"

A trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Living Seas Centre at Flamborough South Landing is just one of the exciting local events organised by our branches. Mike Smith CBiol MSB and photographer Jane Pottas were among members who saw the magnificent chalk sea cliffs of Flamborough Head. The cliffs are home, at times, to over 200,000 seabirds including gannets, razorbills, puffins and fulmars. Find out about local events.

Professional Registers – “I feel empowered”

Patricia Kingston is a science technician at Hove Park School, she has been awarded RSciTech status by the Royal Society of Biology in conjunction with the Science Council. “Since gaining the award I feel I have gained a higher regard and status with employers and colleagues. I now feel empowered to insist on better working conditions and recognition.“

Travel Grants – "I was able to take my love of all things lobster to the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island"

Top Student Award –"I'm looking forward to my future career in biology"

Each year we offer awards to students throughout the country, achieving the highest grade in a bioscience degree at their university. The award provides students with well deserved recognition for their hard work and a years' free membership at the associate level of membership. Alicia Ellison was presented with the award this year at Aston University by Fellow of the Society Dr Anne Hine.

Bioscience Careers Day - "endless information and personalised advice"

Each year we hold a careers day featuring presentations by top speakers covering a range of biology-related subjects, a CV workshop, mock interviews and a chance to mingle with the experts. Katie Rule, BSc human biology student, attended an event in South Wales and was amazed at the variety of pathways she could follow to work in science - the conference provided "endless information and personalised advice". Katie has written a blog about her experience.

Amateur Photography Competition - "I'm highly delighted and honoured my image was selected, the competition was high and I appreciate the difficulty the judges must have had in choosing the winner”

Our annual amateur photography competition aims to inspire people of all ages to engage with biology. Duncan McNaught won the 2017 photographer of the year award with 'Welcome to my humble abode'.

House Spider Survey -"helped foster a love for biology"

We received over 8,000 records of house spiders, and some of our most dedicated participants came from schools.  As well as submitting records and photos to our survey, pupils at Our Lady's Grammar School in County Down created a survey in their school, presenting results to fellow pupils. Teacher Roîsin Beattie says: “Feedback suggests that the celebrations were interesting, educational, enjoyable and helped foster a love of biology in the young biologists who participated.
