A training course from the Biochemical Society

This comprehensive online course covers fundamental statistical concepts and techniques essential for biochemistry and related fields. Learn how to analyse and interpret data, apply statistical methods, and enhance your research skills. Whether you're a student or a professional, this course provides a solid foundation in statistics to support your scientific discoveries.

This course is made up of five modules:

1. Getting familiar with R studio (optional)
2. Descriptive statistics and variables
3. Partitioning variation and hypothesis testing
4. General linear models 1
5. General linear models 2

Following the course, the successful learner will be able to:
  • Use descriptive statistics and variables
  • Use partitioning variation and hypothesis testing
  • Understand general linear models and confident in using them

Whilst prior knowledge of R and R Studio would be useful, this is not essential. There is an optional module (module 1) which will go through the basic R. For a more comprehensive introduction, consider taking our dedicated courses: R for Biochemists 101 and R for Biochemists 201.

Each module is made up of the course content (videos, written text, external links) and quizzes. The quizzes can be found within and at the end of each module and may involve multiple questions. You will receive a score for each quiz, but you do not have to get a certain score to pass each module.

Each module will take approximately 1- 2 hours. However, this course is designed for you to do at your own pace, so the timings are very rough guidelines.

You will have access to the course for one year, and the lead educator (Dr Donald Reid, University of Glasgow) and moderators will reply to your comments for the first 4 weeks from the launch date, so you're encouraged to complete the course during this time. Questions and comments can be left using the comment box at the bottom of each page.
